Pretty Fascinating Roots
Sprouting up in the middle ages around an old Roman fortress called Castrum Regium Themes (or Castri de Thymes, for the history buffs out there). Despite being surrounded by marshlands, this didn't keep it out of trouble, in 1241, the city was invaded and partially trashed by the Tatars. But Timișoara is nothing if not resilient.
Fortification of the City (14th Century)
Timișoara's strategic location near the borders of the Kingdom of Hungary made it an important military outpost. In the early 1300s, the city was fortified to protect it from potential attacks, especially from the Ottoman Empire, which was expanding into the Balkans. Timișoara's fortifications played a crucial role in defending the kingdom's southern frontier.
The city had two fortified parts: the castle and the city, which was surrounded by impressive wooden and stone walls. These defenses were designed to protect the city from various threats, including the growing power of the Ottoman Empire in the region.

In the early 1720s
